NASA developed Technology readiness levels (TLRs) in the 1970s as a method for estimating the maturity of technologies. They go from 1 to 9:
I think they missed the most important one, Technology readiness level 0:
TLR 0: Basic principle not imagined or deemed impossible
That’s planes before 1900s and likely many of the technologies on Clarke’s Chart of the Future; saying that something is impossible is a Failure of Imagination. At large, our civilization no longer believes in technological "miracles" like gravity control or even something more mundane like regrowth of lost limbs: it is the most preposterous idea in that there are no secret left, that we know all physics and can't do more engineering.
